Coral Reefs: A Reef Resilience Toolkit Module

GIS Example

The accompanying GIS example is a series of screen captures from ArcView 3.2 to illustrate a selection method for MPAs, based on a variety of factors that enhance resilience to coral bleaching. Data overlays of biodiversity value, physical factors that promote bleaching resistance, strong coral recruitment, and connectivity were combined to enable managers to identify sites with the greatest potential to survive a bleaching event. Many factors contribute to resilient coral reef communities, including ecological, biological, and physical factors. This example highlights the importance of physical factors to promote bleaching resistance (i.e., cooling, screening, shading). However, managers should also consider and evaluate the ecological and biological factors that confer resilience in the selection process of MPAs.
