Climate-Smart Coral Reef Restoration Planning Workshop – Indonesia, 2025
In March 2025, the Reef Resilience Network co-hosted a workshop with Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN) and key partners at Sorong in the Papua region of Indonesia to strengthen capacity for locally-led efforts to conduct climate-smart reef restoration activities. The two-day workshop was attended by 22 participants representing national and regional research and innovation agencies, marine protection management organizations, local marine non-profits, a regional funding agency, and academia. The goal of the workshop was to support the development of coral reef restoration projects that are embedded in the principles of resilience and provide technical support for using coral thermal data. The workshop was conducted in both English and Bahasa Indonesia using the support of professional translators and YKAN staff.
Participants discussed climate and human threats impacting their reefs; learned about climate-smart planning for management and restoration; and considered and incorporated thermal tolerance data in restoration projects. Since there was such broad attendance across conservation fields – terrestrial, marine, and coral – the workshop focused on broad themes and concepts with engaging activities to consider place-based restoration planning, design, and approaches applicable for future directed projects.
This training was organized by The Nature Conservancy’s Reef Resilience Network (RRN) and Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN). Staff, partners, and hosts included: Dr. Annick Cros (TNC/RRN), Julia Rose (TNC Hawaii), Dr. Courtney Klepac (Stanford University), Awaludinnoer (YKAN) and Grace Easteria (YKAN).
